04 Juy 2009 Brecon II v Croesyceiliog II
A rain effected game meant that the start was delayed until 3pm with the match being reduced to 35 overs.
Croesy 'won' the toss and inserted Brecon, which backfired as they reached 206-2 with J Kenchington(50) and S Kenchington (106 no) providing the bulk of their runs.
In reply Croesy batted well with Lewey(61) Callum Miles (40) and Webs (55) breaking the back of the run chase, but Croesy failed to get the 7 needed off the last 12 balls and eventually snatched a tie from the jaws of victory.
A disapointing day all round.
Brecon II 15 points Croesy II 11 points.
27 June 2009 Croesyceiliog I's v
Sully I
On a lovely summer’s
day, Mike Beacham won the toss and decided to bowl first
on a flat batting track at Sully Cricket Club. Sully got
off to a good start with Ryan and Jamie Sylvester, with
some way-ward bowling from the Croesyceiliog opening
bowling. However, Sully were pegged back in the middle
stages of the innings with the bowling of Akhtar Balouch,
Rhys Jones and Mike Beacham. At the start of the 41st
over the Sully score was 202 for 2, so Sully had plenty
of wickets to score freely in the last 10 overs. Sully
finished on 303 for 4 which was always going to be a
tough task for the Croesyceiliog batsmen. The
Croesyceiliog fielding and bowling were good at times,
but some drop catches, wides and no-balls proved to be
expensive.
The Croesyceiliog
batting innings started well with Will Bragg and Akhtar
Balouch going at 7 runs per over for the first 5 overs,
however it wasn’t meant to be and with regular wickets
falling, Croesyceiliog were eventually bowled out for
138. Special mention to Callum Reid, Connor Miles and
Dave Richards who played the quick bowlers really well,
even if Connor did try and pull former Glamorgan pace
man, Andrew Davies, off the front foot and being hit in
the helmet!!
Croesyceiliog Bowling
– Mike Beacham 3 for 56 off 10 Overs, Akhtar Balouch 1
for 50 off 10 Overs, Rhys Jones 0 for 44 off 10 Overs.
Croesyceiliog Batting
– Will Bragg 23, Callum Reid 15.
27 June 2009 Croesyceiliog IV's v Pontnewynydd II
Losing the toss on a hot day is never a good idea and it was a long 45 overs in the field, especially for Rob Spencer and Matthew Smart from the 13s, making their senior debuts. Fielding lapses again let the opposition get too many runs, they ended on 171 for 7.
A century opening partnership between Tony Walding (71) and Dave Hagger (28) got us off to a really good start before the customary wobble. But then a smart 30 not out from Alex Kemp-Taylor, who had to face the bowling of his elder brother, Ashley Kemp-Taylor finally knocked off the runs with only four wickets down.
27 June 2009 Croesyceiliog II v Pontypridd II
Having finally won a toss, Pontypridd were inserted in this top of the table clash. A wet pitch suited the bowling of Hurls and Gareth Berry and Ponty were restricted to 44-1 off 14 overs. However as the day wore on and the pitch dried out, Ponty amassed the runs and reached 297-4 at tea.
Croesy started their innings well with our Chairman Lewey deciding that he wished to top up his meagre sun tan and was out first ball of our reply, the good part being that this allowed Callum Miles and Webbs to build a solid partnership of 152, with Callum making a fine 77 and Webbs an aggressive 60.
With the hard work done Croesy chased down the game with Paul Evans 81 not out and Hurls 23 not out seeing them home reachinh 300-6 with 3 overs to spare.
Croesyceiliog II 17 points Pontypridd II 8 points
Saturday 20 June 2009
Croesyceiliog III's V Sully III's
With
Sully winning the toss and deciding to bat, we had our work
cut out with yet another depleted seam bowling attack.
Andrew Hagger found some great pace and bounce in the wicket
to take 2 – 39 and martin Lowe exceeded himself with 10
overs, 2 wickets for 24 runs. However the shining light was
Richard Dunne who managed to bag 4 – 26 off 9
sometimes-erratic overs!!!
We got them all out for
120 runs, a great performance all around.
What should have been a
simple reply turned into hard work as the top 5 of our
innings all got out cheaply mainly down to poor shot
selection. But a great 50 n.o from Dunny and 27 n.o from Tom
Curran saw us home.
A great result all round
and with an improved seam attack next week, we will be
looking to give Monkswood a tight game. Thanks also to Lukee
who subbed for Shakey in the field and also to Dunny for his
highly amusing sledging! |
Saturday 20 June 2009 Newport IV's V Croesyceiliog
IV's
After a bright start by Tony Walding and Craig Hall three wickets went down quickly and it was up to Mat Evans and Dave Hagger to start to rebuild the innings. Then Sam Lewis and Alan Lewis stuck around so when Dave was finally out (57) we were near 150. A dashing cameo by Dan Watkins at no.10 put on 17 in the last over and we ended very close to the last batting point at 174.
All four main bowlers did well, but we needed another option here. Dave Dewar and Spud Murphy got 3 wickets each, but we were unlucky with catches not quite going to hand and then fumbled a few runouts. So Newport were able to recover from 100 for 6 for their last pair to win on the last but one ball. It was more exciting than the T20 final.
Saturday 20 June 2009 Miskin Manor II v Croesyceiliog II
Having lost yet another toss, to keep up the 100% record, Croesyceiliog were invited to bat, a decision that backfired after a fuine batting performance by the top 5, who all got runs.
Pick of the bunch was undoubtedly Connor Miles who, after celebrating his birhday this week, followed it up with his maiden senior league century, scoring a magnificent 120. reaching his hundred with a 6 into the pavillion.
Lewey 34, Callum Miles 32, Webs 40, Dunney 40 all contributed , albeit comment must be made about Dunneys poor running between the wicket which led to his dismissal-his sideshow bob feet letting him down once again!
The good bowling and fielding of the past few weeks continued and Miskin never looked in any danger of getting near such a large total. Hurls took 3 wickets in a maiden over, started by a magnificant one handed, diving to his left catch, by the skipper Paul Evans. All the bowlers contributed and special mention to Davey Mulroy who made his debut and bowled well.
Croesyceiliog II 18 points Miskin Manor II 8 points.
13 June 2009 Croesyceiliog II v Newport Fugitives
Having lost the toss yet again Fuggies decided to bat and, on a hot day, reached 266-8, mainly due to a fine 134 not out from their skipper Steve Durston. Two fine stumpings from Too Tall and best bowler was Ieaun Wakefield with 9-2-37-5, who failed to buy a jug.
A fine batting display ensured that Croesy chased down the big total with 8 overs to spare. Adrian Webber 79 and Paul Evans 57 putting on 117 to steer the team to the target, with a fine effort by Ieaun Wakefield 26no and Hurly 12no to bring us home.
Croesyceiliog II 19 points Newport Fugitives 8 points
13 June 2009 Croesyceiliog IV's v Bridgend IV's
Our fourths let another win slip through the hands yesterday at Girlings.
Bridgend batting first were off to a flyer before the youngsters started to reel them in with some good tight bowling and fielding and wickets soon started falling. Good bowling perfomances by Paul Murphy 2-24, Alex Kemp-Taylor 2-37 and star of the bowling attack Davey Mulroy with 4-18 off his 8 overs. Bridgend were eventually bowled out off 35 overs for only 138.
Tony Walding gave a good opening display to see the opening bowlers off but wickets started falling too frequently with not too many runs being scored. A good partnership was needed and that came in the form of A Davies (22) and S Lewis (20) and this steadied the ship and the win was still on with only 4 an over required. But
unfortunately wickets kept falling and in the end Croesy ended up just 18 runs short with plenty of overs left.
Many good points and lessons to be taken from the game. The fileding and chatter was particularly good and they do seem to be gelling as a team, wins will follow if the positive attitude is taken forward.
30 May 2009 Croesyceiliog II v Penarth II
On a boiling hot day Croesy lost the toss for the 4th game in a row and Penarth batted.
A combination of poor bowling and fielding allowed Penarth to make a massive 353-7 with James Docherty making 178. Of the bowlers Monty and Hurls bowled tight, with the Penarth bats stating that Hurls was a good few yards quicker than Monty, whilst Reidy came on and took 3 wickets.
Monty 10-3-30-1 Hurls 10-2-36-2 Bungle 8-0-107-0 Fezzy 10-0-69-1
Tom kear 5-0-45-0 Reidy 7-0-55-3
In reply Croesy never realy got going and ended up on 219 all out.
Despite a suspected fractured finger Reidy batted well for 30 as did Fezzy who made a fine 34 not out. Some irresponsible batting by our senior player Monty, allowed him to make an edgy 36.
Croesy 7 points Penarth 20
30 May 2009 Croesyceiliog III
v Blaina I
This week the thirds were away at
Blaina. The skipper won the toss (first time for
everything!) and following last week’s sterling efforts with
the ball decided to insert Blaina, reasoning the track would
dry out and become easier as the day progressed. How wrong
he was.
Andrew Hagger and Richie Bean opened up
and kept it reasonably tight without threatening too much.
Soon the batsmen settled and started to push the ball around
at ease. Catches were dropped and heads went down as the
afternoon progressed and the runs started to pile up. A
great spell at the end by Gareth Berry (including a
hat-trick) and tight bowling by Owen Hagger meant that
Blaina could only add 40 from their last 10 overs, despite
being at one point 200-0 and they ended with 270-5. Best
bowling was Gareth with 4-64 off 10.
Obviously this would be a tall but not
insurmountable run chase given the depth of the batting
talent available. Unfortunately early wickets put a dent in
our chances from the off, and the batsmen were unable to
establish innings and build a score in the face of
unthreatening but accurate bowling. Wickets continued to
fall regularly with Croesy limping through to 93 all out at
the end.
30 May 2009 Croesyceiliog
IV v Blaina II
The
Fourths batted first v Blaina 2nds and made steady progress
to 90 for 2.
This was thanks to a bright 37 from Alix Davies and generous
bowling from Blaina (42 extras!!).
Then it all went downhill, apart from 14 from Pottsy and we
finished on 117.
Early tea. With one of their opening bats in a real hurry
runs came quickly, with only Paul Berry able to keep a bit
of a check, then making the first breakthrough. Once the
speed merchant had gone wickets fell more regularly though
they finished on 121 - 6. Another 30 runs would have made it
very interesting. Dave Hagger finished with 3-18 and young
Dan Watkins got one, and made a good impression.
Saturday 24th May - 2nds v Barry Away
Nice day to go to Barry. Sun shining and the burgers tasting just right.
Lost the toss and Barry deciding to bat on a soft one. Sunny and no wind for a bit!
Barry 150 all out.
Hurley and Monty opened with great success. The score rate was 2 an over at best and Hurls taking two wickets in an over. Pheasy kept it tight with Bungle the angry man picking up wickets the other end. Run outs and Monty picking up wickets at the end which he deserved after his opening spell.
Pitch had dried a bit but still soft.Lewey and JJ renewing their opening partnership after a few years apart. Normal business resumed. Quick outfield and a boundary ball being bowled an over. Unfortunately Lewey stumbled at the final hurdle bowled with 30 to chase. Dunny came in to see it through not hitting too many runs so JJ could score his first century of the season 104 not out with 92 in boundaries. Ate too much tea to run.
Croesy 153 - 1
Saturday 9th May- 2nds v Ponthir Away
Ponthir won toss and elected to field
James Dunn 30, Mike Dewar 71, Hurls 26 no, Monty 13 no
Good recovery led by Dewar after most of batting failed on a low slow pitch. Excellant knocks too from the skipper 0, and Wakefield who was run out without facing a ball. Hurly also ran out 13 yr old Lewis Pheasant to protect his average.
Monty 10-3-11-4, Hurls 7-2-15-2, Pheasy 5-2-5-3, Ready 3-1-5-1
Excellent bowling from the above backed up by some good fielding, special mention to Toots who after sledging for the first hour then threw his teddy out of the pram and told us all off for sledging-him of all people!!!
Croesy 18pts Ponthir 4pts
Croesy & Girlings - 3rds v Lisvane III
On a flat hard track Lisvane reached 254 - 3 off their 45 overs. Only Andrew Hagger with 2 wickets threatened their batting.
In reply the Thirds ended on 154 - 5 with the majority of the runs coming from Tom Kear (98) who played a mature innings placing his shots carefully.
This was an improved performance on many of last year's, when losing lots of wickets was common.
Saturday 25th April - First XI v Pentrych
Croesy won the toss and put Pentrych in to bat on a flat one. We had a good start with Marshy enjoying bowling into the wind and Brian bowling up the hill with considerable pace. Brian ( 3- 45 ) took two early wickets with some sharp bowling. Unfortunately we let Pentrych back into the game ( JJ dropping the batsman who scored 99!) and they finished with 281 for the loss of five wickets.
Croesy had a solid start with Braggy (48) and JJ(35) which continued with Matt Beacham(56) and Akthar(63) scoring freely in our reply and we finished with a commendable 239 -7 picking up 9 points.
A good effort and some positive performances to take on to next week. |
